Registering a child born abroad
A child born abroad is usually registered in Türkiye through the Turkish consulate in the country of birth or at a civil registry office in Türkiye. For registration in Türkiye, the original or a certified copy of the foreign birth certificate, its apostille from the issuing country and a Turkish translation may be required. Confirm the current list with the civil registry office or the consulate.
Foreign birth certificates may include fields such as the parents’ places of birth and occupations, the issuing municipality or hospital and a registration number. All of them are translated; fields with no equivalent in the Turkish civil registry are not left out.
Using a Turkish birth record abroad
In Türkiye, a birth is usually evidenced by a civil registry record or the multilingual formula A extract from the civil registry office. A hospital birth report often does not replace the official record. The institution abroad will say which document it wants; pass that request on to us exactly.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a difference between short and long birth certificates?
Some countries issue a short form with only the child’s details and a long form with the parents’ details. Registration in Türkiye usually needs the form with parents’ details; confirm with the institution.
Can a hospital birth report be translated?
Yes. Whether it is accepted instead of the official birth record is up to the receiving institution.
What if the parents’ names are spelled differently in the document?
The translation keeps the source spelling. If it differs from the passport, ask the institution beforehand how to explain it; it may want an additional document showing the difference.
This guide is for general information. Confirm the document and certification requirements for your application with the relevant institution, and include the current list of requirements in your translation request.
